“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” –Marcus Aurelius

Sometimes we don’t realize the power we have, when it comes to taking control of our minds. We use our minds everyday, yet it’s one of the most underestimated parts we focus on when it comes to changing. Often times when we focus on changing the change is directed towards our habits or actions but at the center of it all is our thinking and mindset. If we can change the way we think we can really change our lives. Have you ever wanted to achieve a goal but deep in your mind you felt like it was impossible? Or have you ever attempted to do something, but a comment that someone made caused you to second guess yourself? If you don’t believe that you can accomplish something in your mind, you won’t. What we believe and say in our minds is the reality we are creating.

I am a mom of toddler girls and  currently expecting a third child. Recently, I wanted to make a quick stop to the store to pick up a gift before I attended a graduation. I get this comment often but as I was getting ready to go to the store someone made a comment of how hard it would be for me to make a quick stop and take both babies out of the car to pick up a gift.  I often travel to the store and get this same comment. When I first heard the comment I begin to believe it and started to not want to go into the store because of how much work it would be. After a while of thinking, I really focused on changing what I thought. First, I thought about my purpose for going into the store. Second, I thought about how I can’t allow someone else’s limitation to become my limitation. And lastly, I thought about how easy it would be to take each kid out of the car and simply grab a basket and get a gift card. This experience taught me the power of taking control of my mind, because when I believe I can do something I will figure out a way to accomplish it.

“By changing your mind, you can change everything.”

Think about some of the opportunities you made have missed or talked yourself out of because of the doubts in your mind. When we learn to take control of our minds and fill it with positive things we will produce positive results.

Progress is impossible without change; and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.

So how do we change our minds:

1. Focus on the purpose

In order to change our minds we have to focus on the purpose behind what we want to accomplish. If there is no meaning or purpose behind what we are doing then we are wasting our time. When there is purpose and we are intentional this will help us to remember the “why” behind what we are doing, which will keep us on track to accomplish the goal.

2. Believe that you can

In order to change your thinking you have to believe that you can accomplish what you desire. “Belief triggers the power to do.” Your mind will never accomplish something that you don’t believe is possible. So many of our actions and habits are a result of how we think. So when you don’t believe you can accomplish something your mind won’t trigger the actions or habits to accomplish the results.

3. Accept no limitations and take action

In order to change our thinking we must take action and accept no limitations. We have to understand that the fears and limitations of other people are not our responsibility to bare. We can really do whatever we put our minds to if we take action and put in the work.

“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”  –William James

I just want to encourage you to take control of your mind. You have the ability to choose one thought over the other if you are intentional. Feed your mind the right things. The mind is a terrible thing to waste, so accept no limitations and don’t allow your mind to run wild. Invest in your mind be reading books and filling it with positive things, because if we can change our mind we can change everything.
